PI ActiveView

Seamlessly renders existing PI ProcessBook displays for the Web.

Component Summary

PI ActiveView makes the Internet part of your data delivery and display system. With ActiveView, you can view fully functional, interactive PI ProcessBook displays on the Web. ActiveView takes advantage of your existing Internet or intranet communications system to share your displays with colleagues around the world -- wherever there's a Web connection. Once ActiveView is installed on the client, displays are ready to view -- no additional configuration is required. What's more, PI ActiveView leverages your investment in developing PI ProcessBook displays by letting you use them without changes in Internet Explorer or Netscape (with an appropriate plug-in).

And while ActiveView can deliver ProcessBook displays anywhere, it doesn't deliver them to just anyone. ActiveView takes full advantage of Microsoft technologies to add security to valuable corporate data.

Key Features

- Interactive PI ProcessBook displays delivered over the Web
- No configuration needed by viewer after ActiveView is installed
- ActiveView displays preserve ActiveX controls in ProcessBook displays
- Viewers interact and manipulate displays on the Web
- Familiar Windows and ProcessBook functionality

Technical Overview

PI ActiveView is used to view Web pages that contain PI ProcessBook displays, as well as data from databases, including PI DataStorage.

PI ActiveView leverages standard Microsoft technologies, providing an easy path to move existing PI ProcessBook Displays (PDI files) into the Web browser environment. ProcessBook Displays, PI ActiveView components, and Web pages are stored and served from your Web server.

Existing ProcessBook displays are uploaded on the Web server as PDI files. A Web page editor and ActiveView tools are then used to build a Web page and to provide necessary ActiveView components. ProcessBook is not needed for accessing PI data on a remote browser PC.

ActiveView displays employ the same Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and ActiveX controls configured in ProcessBook displays. Embedded controls automatically download to the client browser with the PDI file that contains them.
Automatic downloads of the necessary components and configurations into a remote client machine are supported by cabinet (CAB) files. These CAB files are Microsoft-standard compressed files that ensure efficient downloads of the necessary ActiveView software components. Microsoft's Authenticode technology applies digital signatures to the CAB files to protect users from tampered components. Standard PI username/password login procedures prevent unauthorized data access from PI servers.

When viewing an ActiveView display, users can double click on a trend to expand it to fill the browser. Users can shift the trend's time range by clicking on the right mouse button and selecting "Time Range." They can drag trend cursors across a trend to display values at particular points. When the display includes a VBA script, users can initiate other functionality, such as selecting from a list of ProcessBook displays, switching data points, or changing viewed servers. The display automatically updates with new data as it arrives in PI DataStorage.
